Apple Filling:
- 6 medium apples peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into small pieces
Oat Topping:
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter cubed
Apple Filling:
Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice.
Add the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir until the apples are evenly coated, then spread them into the prepared baking dish.
Dot the apple mixture with the small pieces of butter.
Oat Topping:
In a separate bowl, mix the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
Add the cold cubed butter and work it in with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture looks crumbly with pea-sized clumps.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
Let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving so the filling can thicken.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, then reheat in the oven to bring back the crisp topping.
Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor and texture.
A pinch of cardamom or allspice adds a warm twist to the filling.
